Educational ministry
Bethany Convent, Ulhatu which is 18 km from Ranchi was inaugurated and blessed by his Eminence Telesphore P. Cardinal Toppo, the Archbishop of Ranchi on 29th July, 2012 to reach out to the tribals through Pastoral, Educational and Socio-Medical Apostolates. Sr Maria Leena, the former Provincial Superior of Northern Province, Sr Erasma, Sr Grace Maria and Sr Jacintha Herold from her team and Sr Jyoti, the former Superior General, and Bethany sisters from the neighbouring communities were present for the occasion. Rev. Fr Maximus Toppo, the parish Priest, welcomed the sisters warmly along with the parishioners. The first community consisted of Sr Rose Rita as Superior, Sr Anujyoti and Sr Beena John as its members.
To begin with Sisters started the English Medium School with pre-primary classes in July, 2013. It was on 21st April 2014 the K.G. block of Bethany Convent School, Ulhatu, was blessed by Fr Anand Bhengra, the parish priest of the Basilica of Divine Motherhood, Ulhatu and inaugurated by Sr Shaila, the Provincial Superior of Eastern Province. The school has developed slowly and steadily. Sr Rose Rita has put in her best efforts and Sr Olinda, Sr Anujyoti, Sr Beena John, Sr Premi Kishori, Sr Jovita Saldanha, Sr Alka Bindu Sr Margaret Xalxo and Sr Sushmitha ably assisted her during her tenure as Superior and Headmistress for the development of the institute.
From July, 2015 onwards Sr Margarita D’Souza is the Superior and Sr Salerine is the Headmistress of the School which is in its third year of infancy with classes from Nursery to III having 224 students. Sr Lydia Lobo, Sr Sumitra and Sr Sylvia Kindo assist them in the educational and pastoral apostolate. 50% of the students are Catholics. On July 16th 2016 the Foundation Stone was blessed by His Eminence Cardinal Telesphore P.Toppo for the New School Building ( I to XII) and laid by Sr Shaila BS, the Provincial Superior of Eastern Province. The construction work is going on. There is scope for the growth of this school which can make a significant contribution to empower the Christian Community.
Sisters are residing in the small building put up earlier for the watchman. It has been modified and extended to suit the minimum needs of the Sisters. They are involved also in Pastoral and Social Apostolate and have established good rapport with the people around and in the parish.
