Educational ministry

It is said that the greatest discovery of any generation is that human beings can alter their life by altering their attitude. To facilitate this positive outlook in life, a good education is one of the options. Choosing this option to reach out to the economically and educationally less privileged people of Tora in Bargarh, Odisha, Bethany dared to dream of an English Medium School in this area.

Bargarh is located in Western Odisha. The whole of Bargarh lies in the Deccan Plateau with Eastern Ghats running close to the town. Though education in Odisha is witnessing a rapid transformation, the light of literacy has not yet reached many an interior area.

Rt. Rev Lucas Kerketta, the Bishop of Sambalpur, invited the Bethany Sisters to establish a community at Bargarh and help in the educational, social and pastoral apostolates. An agreement to this effect was made on 10 May 2009 between the diocese of Sambalpur and the Bethany Congregation.

Sr Shaila and Sr Rose Rita arrived who arrived at Bargargh on 16 July 2009, along with Sr Gracy Gamjya started the preliminary work of the school. Sr Maria Leena, the Provincial Superior, on 7th July 2009, canonically erected  a community with Sr Shaila  as the superior, Sr Alice Kamla Minz and Sr Kanti Dung Dung as community members. Bethany Convent Bargargh was in a rented house in Tengerpara, near spinning mill. Along with the educational apostolate the members of the community participated in the apostolic mission of the Church through socio-pastoral apostolate.

After the transfer of Sr Shaila in July 2010 as one of the Provincial Councillors to Ish Kripa, Karnal Sr Anita Moras who took over as Superior and Principal for 6 years has put in lot of efforts to develop Bethany, Bargarh. At present Sr Shubasini is the principal and superior. The school now has 600 students guided by the loving hands of the sisters. The Bethany Convent and school have grown out from many problems and challenges and the service continues with much faith energy, enthusiasm, and hard work.

Year of establishment : 07.07.2009
