November 1st, solemnity of All Saints Day was a memorable day in the annals of Southern Province. This was the day chosen by God for the blessing and inauguration of the new convent building, Bethany Convent, Uppudi, Andhra Pradesh.


The new building was blessed by Most Rev Jayarao Polimera the Bishop of Eluru and was inaugurated by Sr Judy Varghese the Assistant Provincial Superior of Southern Province. The thanksgiving Eucharist was officiated by Most Rev Bishop Jayarao Polimera and was concelebrated by the priests of the Konaseema Vicariate, Fr Thomas, the Parish Priest, Fr Arogyaswami, Vicar Forene, Parish Priest& Director, Sagarathara Velankani Matha Shrine Samaldeevi, Fr Thambi Kandru, Fr Jnanaprakash Anthony Nagar PP, M F Fathers.In his homily the Bishop appreciated the service of Bethany Sisters in this remote area, devoting themselves to the education of poor children and faith formation. Besides the presence of quite a few Bethany sisters, the presence of CST Sisters, Sisters of Vincent de Paul enhanced our joy.

Bethany Convent, Uppudi was erected on 6th May 2008 with four sisters in a small rented house. Since then, the sisters were actively engaged in faith formation, social work and education. A short felicitation programme was held to honour Sr Judy Varghese, Sr Annie George and Sr Merlyn the pioneers, Sr Sheeba and Sr Tresa Cheriyan the former superiors. The hard labour of the engineer, the contractor and the labourers were gratefully acknowledged. Students of Bethany English Medium High School added joy to the celebration with their centenary dance. MPTC of Uppudi and Bantumalli, the Panchayat President,the guests of the day appreciated the missionary activities of the sisters over the years.Finally, asumptuous meal was served to all the invitees.
