The sisters of the North East Province longed for a space in the heart of Mangalore, close to the origins of our Congregation where the Sisters from the North East will be able to draw inspiration from the vision and Charism of the Servant of God R F C Mascarenhas, the Founder and the founding members.

The dream of the sisters to have a community of their own in the historical setting was fulfilled in a place not very far away from Bethany Mother House, Bendur, when Sr Jyoti, the then Superior General,  initiated the process of procuring a plot of land in addition to the land donated by the Tellis family.

Sr Jyoti sensed the need of the society at the moment was to provide a home for the senior citizens to have a peaceful living towards the end of their lives. Thus a Trust was set up and named ‘Mother Martha Memorial Trust’ in honour of the first founding member and the first Superior General of the Congregation.

The formal erection of the convent and the blessing of the ‘Deva Kripa’, Senior Citizens Home took place on 2 July 2007. Sr Gretta D’Souza was the first Superior and Sr Hariette, Sr Therese Simon, Sr Diana and Sr Sunita Jyothi were the community members.

Within a short space of time, the sisters established a very cordial relationship in the neighbourhood by their participation in the activities of the Ward and the Parish.

In the first year of its existence on 20 December 2007 Bethany Convent, Attavar witnessed the struggles and passing away of Sr Doyline who had worked for many years in the Northeast and was suffering from cancer.

Sr Jossy took over as Superior of Bethany Convent Attavar on 15 June 2013. She took great care of the junior sisters and looked after the Senior Citizens with compassion and love. But God’s plan would have it differently. In the month of September 2013 she was diagnosed with cancer of the uterus. She suffered for two long years and on 19 November 2015 she fell a victim to  her illness. She too is laid to rest at the Milagres Church cemetery.

Sr Chrisette was appointed and officially installed as third Superior on 5 May 2016. Bethany Convent Attavar serves as student house and formation house for North-eastern Province. Student sisters of the Province pursue their education in various institutions in the city.

At present Mother Martha Memorial Senior Citizen Home, has 28 inmates. Sisters with much love and compassion serve them day and night and look after their physical, psychological, moral and Spiritual needs. The inmates are happy and live joyfully in the company of sisters.

Year of establishment : 02.08.2007
