Sr M Benjamin BS (89) nee Mariamma Varkey of Bethany Congregation, Southern Province, passed away on 3 September, 2022 at 12.57 am at Stella Maria Convent, Puthenthope, Trivandrum, in Kerala.
She hails from Pala Diocese of Kottayam District. She is the daughter of late Mr Varkey and Mariamma Varkey Thodukayil. Her funeral rites will be held on 3 September, 2022 at 5.00pm at St Ignatius Church, Puthenthope. Sr Benjamine has rendered her services as a teacher, a zealous missionary for about 65 years in our communities of Simla (Norhern Province Pioneer), Bathinda, Londa, Gurpur, Westhill, Thenhipalam, Pilakavu, Anapara, Thalamukil, Kalpetta, Pathanapuram, Kamukincode and Puthenthope.
She was a very caring and vigilant Superior. She was very respectful towards the authority. She was a committed and dedicated teacher and won the hearts of small children and parents alike. After her retirement, she was fully engaged in pastoral ministry at different parishes. She would attend any number of Masses on the same day offered in the parish,on various occasions. People would appreciate her presence on such occasions. She was polite and gentle in her ways. All through her years she worked zealously. She had great love for the poor and sick and would visit them very often. She was very cheerful always.She was suffering from age related problems but was able to manage her personal needs.
On 5 June 2022 she had a fall and suffered head injury. She was treated in the hospital for about two weeks and later discharged as she showed certain improvement. She continued to be in coma and was bed ridden for the last three months till she answered the call of her beloved and entered her eternal home this morning.
I extend my sincere condolences to Sr Judy Varghese BS, the Provincial Superior and all the sisters of Southern Province; Sr Tessy Maria, the local Superior and the members of Stella Maris Convent, Puthenthope.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord and perpetual light shine upon her; may she rest in peace.
