Sr Maria Rositta Fernando (63) nee Maria Magdalane Rositta Fernando, of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Little Flower of Bethany, Northern Province, flew to her heavenly abode on 1st May 2021 at 5:00 am in St Joseph’s Hospital, Ghaziabad due to a cardiac arrest. She is the member of Bethany Convent, Tanakpur, Uttarakhand at the foothills of Himalayas.

She hails from Idindakarai, in the Diocese of Tuticorin. She is the daughter of Late Mr A M Ambrose Fernando and Mrs Angeline Fernando. She has four siblings-two brothers and two sisters. She is the niece of late Bishop Thomas Fernando of Tuticorin and Trichy Diocese.

She was a committed religious and loving Superior. She lived her vows consciously; possessed minimum things in life in the spirit of poverty, and created a joyful atmosphere in the community. She was a cheerful giver.

She has rendered services in socio – medical apostolate for the past 30 years. As a compassionate nurse and efficient social worker she understood the pain and suffering of the people she served. She was dedicated in her service to humanity and gave herself selflessly. She had a great love for the poor and the sick whom she served without counting the cost. She was at home with people of all kinds even Maoists in the villages.

Sr Maria Rositta was suffering from fever and chest congestion for the last few days for which she was being treated. Her tests for COVID-19 were negative. All the same she suddenly developed breathing problems and when her oxygen saturation level was below normal, she was shifted from Bethany Convent, Tanakpur to St Joseph’s Hospital, Ghaziabad (UP, Delhi border) a hospital run by Medical Sisters of St Joseph (MSJ). Though her oxygen level improved, her blood pressure did not show any improvement. Her condition remained critical for the last couple of days.

On 01.05.2021 at about 4:30 am her condition became serious. Dr Sr Ally, MSJ who was treating her, informed Sr Erasma, the Provincial Superior about her critical condition. At 5:00 am she breathed her last and went to the embrace of the Heavenly Father in her eternal home.

I extend my sincere condolences to Sr Erasma, the Provincial Superior and her team, as well as Sr Emerentia Kujur, the Superior and the community members of Bethany Convent, Tanakpur. I am grateful for the loving care that they bestowed on her especially during her illness.

Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul rest in peace.
