In the edges of the Western Ghats, in the district of Shimoga in Karnataka state, is a small tranquil town named Sagar.  It was in 1950, the grace-filled year of the twin jubilee of the Founder, namely, the platinum jubilee of his birth and golden jubilee of his priestly ordination that Bethany made an entry into Sagar in the district of his birth place, Shimoga, in the diocese of Mysore.

Mother Petra, the Superior General, requested the permission of the Bishop of the diocese of Mysuru to open a community in Sagar.  Most Rev Rene Feuga was happy to have the presence of the Bethany Sisters at Sagar. The five sisters – Sr Lazarus, the first Superior of the community, Sr Rita, Sr Clemence, Sr Gemma, Sr Presenta and Ms Maggi Bai, the helper, landed in Sagar on 16th May 1950.  Rev. Fr Fulgence Lopez was the Parish Priest. The administration of St Joseph’s Primary School comprising standard I to IV was handed over to the Bethany Sisters on 23rd March 1950, Sr Lazarus as the Headmistress. In 1954 during the the Marian Year, Nirmala High School was started. Sr. Bertha was the first Headmistress of the school.
